Left ventricular noncompaction cardiomyopathy

1. What is Left ventricular noncompaction cardiomyopathy

Left ventricular noncompaction cardiomyopathy is a congenital abnormality characterized by a compact thin epicardial layer and thickened trabeculated spongiformlike endocardial layer.
The apical and mid-ventricular part of the inferior and lateral left ventricular wall are most commonly affected.

2. Left ventricular noncompaction cardiomyopathy is usually associated with congenital left or right ventricular outflow tract obstruction

3. Diagnostic criteria of Left ventricular noncompaction cardiomyopathy
– The ratio of noncompacted to compacted myocardium is more than 2.3 on end-diastole
; Thin outer (epicardial) compact layer
; Thick inner (endocardial) noncompacted layer
– excessively prominent trabecular meshwork (spongiform)
– deep intertrabecular recesses
– well enhancing noncompacted area

4. Location of Left ventricular noncompaction cardiomyopathy ; in the majority of cases
– apex and mid-ventricular segments of both the inferior and lateral left ventricular wall
sparing the left ventricular base
– other ventricular segments are rarely affected
