Malacoplakia is an uncommon granulomatous inflammatory condition that can affect various organs with predilection for the genitourinary tract, especially urinary bladder.
Soft plaque resulting from defective macrophage function can be seen in various organ.
This condition has peak incidence in middle age with female predilection (4:1).
Associated with immunosuppression, infection and systemic illnesses.
- Symptom
- Fever, flank pain and a palpable mass
- Imaging finding
- Variable ⇨ multiple, polypoid, vascular, solid masses
- Vary in size from a few millimeters to several centimeters
- Occasionally, locally aggressive and invades surrounding structures even causing bone erosions
- Treatment of malakoplakia
- Unifocal diseases
- Surgical excision is the choice treatment
- Bilateral or multifocal
- Typically cured after using quinolones, rifampin, doxycycline and/or vancomycin in combination with a cholinergic agonist such as bethanechol chloride.
