What causes the Wernicke encephalopathy?

Wernicke encephalopathy is a type of alcohol induced encephalopathy and an acute metabolic disease caused by thiamine (Vitamine B1) deficiency characterized by a clinical triad of ophthalmoplegia, ataxia, and confusion.
