Prepatellar bursitis

  • Washerwoman’s knee, housemaid’s knee, preacher’s knee
  • Inflammation of bursae anterior to patella (prepatellar) or tibial tubercle (pretibial)
  • Cause
    • Chronic repetitive trauma due to friction or prolonged pressure
    • Acute trauma
    • Post-surgical
    • Related to underlying disease (Gout, RA)
  • Imaging
    • Well-defined mass in subcutaneous space anterior to patella
    • Signal usually follows fluid but may be complicated if hemorrhagic or infected
